Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80. Her nephew Bryan Seaver announced her death on behalf of the Parton and Owens families on August 25. Parton leaves behind one of the most extraordinary legacies in entertainment, from “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” to 9 to 5, Dollywood and her beloved Imagination Library. Country music legend Dolly Parton, the singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist whose unmistakable voice and larger-than-life personality made her one of the most beloved entertainers of all time, has died. She was 80 years old. Parton’s family announced her death on August 25, according to People and Reuters. A cause of death has not been publicly announced. Her nephew and longtime head of security, Bryan Seaver, shared the news in a video on Parton’s social media accounts on behalf of the Parton and Owens families. Seaver said Parton had asked him years earlier to make the announcement when the time came. She began writing songs as a child, appeared on local radio by age 11 and performed at the Grand Ole Opry at 13. After graduating from high school, she headed for Nashville and eventually found national fame alongside Porter Wagoner. Her solo career produced some of country music’s most enduring songs, including “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” “Here You Come Again,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You,” the latter of which became an international phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded it decades later. Parton ultimately wrote an estimated 3,000 songs and sold more than 100 million records worldwide. She made her movie debut alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 1980’s 9 to 5, earning an Academy Award nomination for its title song, and went on to appear in films including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, Steel Magnolias and Straight Talk. Her long list of honors included 11 Grammy Awards, membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, Kennedy Center Honors and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. She helped turn Dollywood into one of Tennessee’s best-known attractions and founded the Imagination Library, inspired in part by her father’s inability to read or write, to provide free books to young children. She also supported scholarships, disaster relief and numerous other charitable causes, and donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2020 toward research that helped support development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. She had dealt with health problems in the final year of her life and canceled a planned Las Vegas residency in May 2026 while undergoing treatment. Still, just four days before her death, Parton told People that she was continuing to work and remained focused on the future. “I’ve dreamed myself into a corner and I still have so many things I want to achieve,” she said. That determination was pure Dolly: a woman who turned an impoverished childhood in the Tennessee mountains into an extraordinary life filled with songs, laughter, rhinestones and generosity — and who became, to millions of people, something much more than a country music star.
