Although Grease 2 was a box office flop, the original made nearly $400 million and played no small role in making actors like the late Olivia Newton-John famous. But truth be told, movie critics and fans were not at all impressed with the sequel, and neither was Michelle. She explained that her alleged comment about hating Grease 2 in a 2007 interview was taken out of context and incorrectly reported. The actress admits years after the interview that Grease 2 will always be special to her and her career, while also revealing her surprise at the cult following Grease has amassed over the years. I remember there was this one ad that was like, ‘Too hot.’ And I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is so awkward. What if people don’t think I’m hot? I’m being shoved down people’s throats.’ I do remember feeling a lot of pressure on our shoulders for this to succeed. Because the first one was so beloved. It was a really tough act to follow,” she told Entertainment Weekly. Michelle also talked about her audition for the role and how she did not expect to be selected for the part. And somebody’s assistant, I think it was Pat Birch’s assistant, ran after me across the Paramount studio lot. I said something about being really embarrassed and she said, ‘Well, you shouldn’t be, because she wants you to come back tomorrow,’” she recalled.
