More than 60 years after The Dick Van Dyke Show first premiered, the classic sitcom still holds a special place in television history. The CBS comedy ran from 1961 to 1966 and followed Rob Petrie, a television comedy writer trying to balance his busy career with life at home. Alongside Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore helped turn the simple premise into something audiences couldn't get enough of. Unlike many family sitcoms of the era, 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' divided its attention between Rob Petrie's home life and his job in the writers' room of the fictional 'The Alan Brady Show.' The series ultimately won 15 Emmy Awards during its five-season run. After the show ended, however, its stars followed remarkably different paths. Some found even greater success, while others eventually moved away from acting. The series was created by Carl Reiner, who drew inspiration from his own experiences working as a writer and performer on Sid Caesar's 'Your Show of Shows.' Reiner originally intended to star in the sitcom himself and even filmed a pilot called 'Head of the Family.' After CBS passed on that version, the concept was reworked with Dick Van Dyke as Rob Petrie, helping create the television classic audiences know today. She later starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, winning four Emmys, and earned an Oscar nomination for Ordinary People. Through MTM Enterprises, she also helped bring shows like The Bob Newhart Show and Hill Street Blues to television. Moore died in 2017 at age 80. Moore's Laura Petrie also quietly helped change how television wives were portrayed. Rather than dressing exclusively in the dresses and skirts commonly seen on sitcom mothers of the era, Laura frequently wore fitted capri pants around the Petrie home. The wardrobe choice attracted attention at the time but ultimately became an iconic part of her character, helping establish Moore as a new kind of television leading lady. Behind the scenes, Carl Reiner remained an important part of the series beyond his role as creator. He occasionally stepped in front of the camera as Alan Brady, Rob's famously egotistical television-star boss. Rose Marie appeared on The Doris Day Show and celebrated Sally's influence on female comedy writers. Morey Amsterdam remained active in television, appearing on The Hollywood Squares and Match Game. Amsterdam died in 1996 at 87, while Rose Marie died in 2017 at 94. Rose Marie's Sally Rogers was particularly notable for the era. Sally wasn't simply a secretary or supporting character in the office; she was one of the comedy writers responsible for making 'The Alan Brady Show' funny. Rose Marie herself had already spent decades in entertainment by the time the sitcom premiered, beginning her professional career as a child performer known as Baby Rose Marie and later becoming an accomplished singer and comedian. Another important figure in the show's history was Richard Deacon, who played Mel Cooley, Alan Brady's long-suffering producer and frequent target of Buddy Sorrell's jokes. Deacon became one of television's most recognizable character actors, appearing in numerous programs and films before his death in 1984. His exasperated exchanges with Morey Amsterdam provided some of the sitcom's most reliable laughs. He studied theater arts at UCLA but eventually worked primarily behind the scenes in production and post-production. Reruns introduced Rob, Laura, Buddy, Sally, and the rest of the gang to viewers who weren't even born when the series first aired, while television historians have continued to recognize its influence on workplace and family comedies that followed.
