Annette Funicello was born in Utica, New York, on October 22, 1942, which means 2026 marks her 84th heavenly birthday. She would have been 84 today. To a generation of kids, she was simply Annette. First she was the Mouseketeer, then the girl in the beach movies with Frankie Avalon. Those beach movies came with a private request from Walt Disney himself. He asked her for one favor before she ever set foot on the sand, and she told the story more than once over the years. Here is what he asked, and how she answered. How Did Walt Disney Find Annette Funicello? Annette Funicello on The Mickey Mouse Club / Everett Collection In 1955, she danced the lead in Swan Lake at a recital at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank. According to D23, Disney's official fan club, Walt Disney was in the audience scouting children for a new television show. The studio called her dance school the next day, and she became the 24th Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club. Disney wanted amateurs over child actors, the Boston Globe reported. Fan mail poured in. She later recalled to D23 that around age 13, Disney asked her, "Do you have lots of Italian relatives?" His reason: "The amount of mail for you is incredible!" When the show ended in 1959, she was the only Mouseketeer who stayed under contract with the studio, according to CBS News. Disney put her in Zorro, The Shaggy Dog and Babes in Toyland. He also made her a recording artist. "Tall Paul" reached the Top 10 in 1959, and "O Dio Mio" followed in 1960. Teen idol Paul Anka dated her on the concert circuit in the late 1950s. The Associated Press reported that Anka said Disney tried to end the romance, which led to one of his biggest hits, "Puppy Love." The site has covered why Paul Anka's romance with Annette Funicello ended. Her next leading man would be the one fans paired her with for life. Who Was Frankie Avalon To Annette? Annette Funicello in 1961 / Everett Collection In 1963, Disney loaned her to American International Pictures for Beach Party, opposite singer Frankie Avalon. The Boston Globe counted six beach movies for the pair. Titles included Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach and Beach Blanket Bingo. Avalon remembered a young star who never quite believed her own fame. "She would say, 'Really?' She was so bashful about it. She was an amazing girl," he told the Associated Press after her death. "It's like losing a family member. I'm devastated but I'm not surprised." In 1965, she married her agent, Jack Gilardi. They had three children: Gina, Jack Jr. and Jason. After the beach films, the offers changed. "People are more interested in changing my image than I am," she said, according to the AP. About the scripts: "I read the first 10 pages, and I'm a prostitute or a doper, and I fold them up and send them back." She stayed in living rooms instead. In the 1970s she became the face of Skippy peanut butter, appearing in commercials with her own children. She and Gilardi divorced in 1981, and in 1986 she married horse breeder Glen Holt. A year later, she reunited with Avalon on screen, and that reunion is where her hardest chapter began. What Secret Did Annette Funicello Keep For Five Years? (Everett Collection) In 1987, Avalon co-produced and co-starred with her in Back to the Beach, a self-mocking return to their old films. While making it, she first had trouble walking. That year she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She kept it private. As her balance worsened, she worried that strangers would assume she had been drinking. The AP reported that this fear is what led her to go public in 1992, five years after the diagnosis. "My equilibrium is no more; it's just progressively getting worse," she said, according to the AP. She chose to make the diagnosis useful. She launched the Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases, which supports research into MS and related conditions. "There's a reason for this, and I know it's to help others," she said, as CBS News reported. Disney named her a Disney Legend in 1992. Her 1994 autobiography, A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes, became a TV movie the following year. Annette Funicello died in Bakersfield, California, on April 8, 2013. She was 70. The cause was complications of MS, which she had lived with for more than 25 years, a life of joy and strength to the end. Yet the story she was asked about most went back to 1963. What Favor Did Walt Disney Ask Before Her Beach Movies? (Everett Collection) When American International Pictures came calling in 1963, Disney still held her contract. "Mr. Disney read the scripts, and he thought they were good clean fun," she told NPR in 1993. "And he told me to go out and have a good time." Then came the request. "He said, 'Would you mind not exposing your navel?'" she told NPR's Liane Hansen. "He said, 'I know all the girls will be bikini-clad, and I would like you to look different. Is that OK with you?'" Her answer was immediate: "And I said, 'Of course it's OK.' I respected him so much that whatever he said was OK." She told a slightly different version to the Associated Press. In that telling, Disney said, "Annette, I have a favor to ask of you. I know all the girls are wearing bikinis, but you have an image to uphold. I would appreciate it if you would wear a one-piece suit." She added, "I did, and I never regretted it." Fans still argue over how strictly the rule held. In a 2013 tribute, Salon noted that as the series went on, "the bottom half of her swimsuit creeps progressively lower and lower down her torso." Walt Disney died in December 1966, the year after her last beach picture with Avalon. Nearly three decades later, she was still telling his favor to interviewers as a fond memory.
