39-Year-Old ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Star Mara Wilson Steps Returns To Spotlight Years After Leaving Hollywood

by Ruth A

Published October 17, 2026

More than three decades after Mrs. Doubtfire became a family favorite, Mara Wilson is making headlines with a rare public appearance. The 39-year-old former child star, who captured audiences’ hearts in several beloved 1990s movies, recently stepped onto the red carpet looking elegant and confident.

According to Parade, the actress attended Selena Gomez’s fourth annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on October 14, 2026. Wearing a beautiful black beaded gown, Wilson posed for photographers, showing how much she has changed since her childhood acting days. Although she largely stepped away from Hollywood years ago, her appearance offered a nostalgic reminder of the young star who once shared the screen with Robin Williams and Danny DeVito.

Wilson looked sophisticated in her black gown as she attended the annual fundraiser, which supports youth mental health initiatives. Her appearance attracted renewed attention to her life beyond Hollywood, particularly because she rarely attends major celebrity events. While many remember her as the adorable Natalie Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire, the former actress has since pursued a different career path that allows her to continue exploring her passion for storytelling.

In a May 2026 interview with PEOPLE, Wilson revealed that she now works as an audiobook editor and has contributed to approximately 70 books. She explained that the profession allows her to explore different characters while remaining connected to the creative world. Having grown up loving theater and performance, she considers storytelling an essential part of her identity. Moreover, the work gives her opportunities to express herself without the pressures that accompanied her early Hollywood fame.

Remembering Her ‘Matilda’ Fame and Decision to Leave Hollywood

Wilson became a household name in 1993 when she appeared alongside Robin Williams and Sally Field in Mrs. Doubtfire. She later starred in the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street before playing the title character in Matilda in 1996. However, despite her early success, she gradually moved away from major film roles after appearing in Thomas and the Magic Railroad in 2000. She eventually discovered new creative opportunities through writing, voice acting, podcasts, and other projects.

Although Wilson occasionally appears in friends’ projects, she has little interest in returning to Hollywood full-time, preferring to embrace aging naturally rather than meet industry expectations. She continues working in voice acting and audiobooks, building a fulfilling career beyond film. Her recent red carpet appearance offers fans a nostalgic reminder of the beloved 1990s movies that made her famous.
