Vicki Lawrence was everywhere in the 1980s. While starring as the famously sharp-tongued Thelma “Mama” Harper, she also took on a completely different television job as host of NBC’s Win, Lose, or Draw.
According to MeTV, Vicki Lawrence’s Mama’s Family years were already demanding, but Lawrence somehow added game-show hosting and raising two children to the mix. Her schedule became so packed that she joked in a 1987 interview that the extra work at least “keeps me off the streets.”
Vicki Lawrence Mama’s Family Schedule Left Little Downtime

Lawrence spent weekdays working on Mama’s Family, then hosted Win, Lose, or Draw roughly every other weekend. The game show divided celebrities into teams and challenged them to communicate names and clues through drawings.
Although Lawrence loved game shows and had appeared as a contestant on programs including Match Game, The $10,000 Pyramid, and Super Password, hosting brought a different kind of pressure. She described Win, Lose, or Draw as chaotic and compared the experience to a “crash course in Dick Clark.” Ironically, she found playing Mama easier than appearing as herself. Behind Mama’s gray hair, glasses, and larger-than-life personality, Lawrence could disappear into a character. Hosting a game show required her to drop that protection and simply be Vicki.
Mama Opened the Door to Another Side of Her Career

The Vicki Lawrence Mama’s Family connection began years earlier on The Carol Burnett Show, where Lawrence first developed the character as part of the recurring “The Family” sketches. When producers suggested giving Mama her own sitcom, Lawrence initially doubted whether she could carry a series. Executive producer Joe Hamilton encouraged her to try, and Carol Burnett supported the idea. Lawrence eventually embraced the challenge, and Mama’s Family went on to run for six seasons across its network and syndicated incarnations.
Lawrence’s love of game shows even reached Mama’s world, with the Harper family appearing on Family Feud and later Jeopardy!. Years later, she competed with her real family on Celebrity Family Feud. In the 1980s, Lawrence balanced sitcoms, game shows, and family life while showing two sides of herself: Mama, one of TV comedy’s most memorable characters, and the energetic performer viewers saw on Win, Lose, or Draw.
