by Ruth A

Published September 29, 2026

Sylvester Stallone built his career playing larger-than-life action heroes, but maintaining the powerful physique audiences associated with Rocky Balboa and John Rambo came at a serious personal cost. The actor has now opened up about just how unhealthy his pursuit of the perfect action-star body became during the height of his fame.

According to PageSix, in a candid new interview, Stallone revealed that his fixation on staying extremely lean while making Rocky III developed into an eating disorder. The Sylvester Stallone bulimia revelation offers a troubling look behind one of the most famous physiques in 1980s Hollywood and the pressure he placed on himself to maintain it.

Stallone said his approach to preparing for roles eventually moved beyond disciplined training and became an obsession with his appearance. While filming 1982’s Rocky III, he said his body fat dropped to an extreme level and he struggled with bulimia because he became determined not to lose the physique he had achieved.

The actor also acknowledged using steroids while preparing for physically demanding roles during that period. Stallone said the image audiences saw onscreen did not come naturally and admitted that maintaining it took a “terrible toll.” His comments add a very different context to the muscular Rocky and Rambo image that helped define his career during the 1980s.

Years later, Stallone found an unexpected sense of freedom while preparing for the 1997 crime drama Cop Land. Instead of portraying another sculpted action hero, he played Freddy Heflin, a weary New Jersey sheriff. The role allowed him to loosen the physical expectations he had spent years imposing on himself. That change also demonstrated another side of Stallone as a performer. Although audiences had become accustomed to seeing him as the almost superhuman figure behind franchises such as Rocky and Rambo, Cop Land asked him to rely less on physical perfection and more on vulnerability and character.

At 80, Stallone can look back differently on the extreme effort behind some of his most famous roles. His bulimia disclosure shows that the physique celebrated in Rocky III came with hidden consequences. Behind that image was an actor whose drive to meet his own standards had become damaging.
