The Simple Tricks That Can Keep Your Mums Blooming Until Thanksgiving

by Ruth A

Published September 17, 2026

Few plants make a porch or entryway feel more like autumn than a pot overflowing with chrysanthemums. Unfortunately, those cheerful blooms can sometimes dry out or fade much faster than expected, especially when warm daytime temperatures stick around.

According to Southern Living, the good news is that fall mums can stay colorful for weeks with a little extra attention. From choosing the right plant at the nursery to changing where and how you water it, a few simple habits can help stretch those bright blooms further into the season.

Choose Fall Mums With Longevity in Mind

It is tempting to grab the fullest, most colorful plant at the garden center, but the showiest mum may not last the longest. Before buying, check the foliage from every side and make sure the plant feels healthy and well hydrated. Brown leaves, dry soil, or an unusually light pot can signal that the plant has already spent too much time without enough water.

The stage of the blooms matters too. If you need an instant display for a party or gathering, a plant covered in open flowers makes sense. For color that lasts longer, nursery expert Alex Williams recommends choosing one whose buds have only started to open. Mums generally bloom for about four to six weeks, so starting with tighter buds gives you more of that cycle to enjoy. Repotting can also help because extra fresh soil holds more moisture and reduces how quickly the container dries out.

Water, Shade, and Deadheading Can Extend the Show

Once you bring your mum home, placement can make a noticeable difference. Full sun encourages flowers to move through their bloom cycle faster, while partial sun or some shade can slow things down. That makes a protected porch or another spot away from relentless afternoon sun a smart choice when longevity matters more than rapid blooming.

Watering may be the most important habit of all. Check beneath the soil surface regularly, particularly during warm fall days, and give the plant a drink when it feels dry. Aim water directly at the soil or use bottom watering rather than pouring it over the flowers and foliage, which can damage the more delicate growth. Finally, remove blooms as soon as they begin fading and trim away declining leaves. Deadheading directs the plant’s energy toward healthier growth and keeps the entire display looking fresher. With those small adjustments, a pot of chrysanthemums can remain one of the easiest ways to keep autumn color going well beyond the first few weeks of the season.
