83-Year-Old Judge Judy Is Retiring From On-Camera TV After 30 Years: ‘I Did It’

by Ruth A

Published September 11, 2026

For nearly three decades, Judge Judy Sheindlin has been one of television’s most unmistakable personalities, and now it’s time for retirement—sort of. Her quick wit, blunt rulings, and no-nonsense courtroom style turned Judge Judy into a daytime institution and made Sheindlin a household name far beyond the world of small claims court.

According to TV Insider, now, at 83, the longtime TV judge is preparing to step away from appearing regularly on screen. As Judy Justice heads toward its final episode in October, the judge Judy retirement story marks the end of an era—but not the end of Sheindlin’s involvement in television.

Why Judge Judy Feels Retirement Doesn’t Mean She’s Done Working

Sheindlin has said she simply has other things she wants to enjoy, including family time and afternoon naps. She is also ready to leave behind the routine of hair and makeup that comes with appearing on camera. Still, she wants her voice and point of view to remain part of the entertainment world, even if audiences no longer see her behind the bench every day.

One of those next chapters includes developing an adult animated series inspired by the viral AI Baby Judge Judy videos. She is also working behind the scenes on Adam’s Law, a new syndicated courtroom show starring her son, Adam Levy. Sheindlin believes Levy now has the confidence to carry a half-hour unscripted show himself, saying that while he may not have been ready several years ago, he is ready now.

Her Courtroom Legacy Is Moving Into a New Generation

Levy previously appeared on Prime Video’s Tribunal Justice, but Adam’s Law gives him a courtroom show of his own. The series premieres Sept. 14, nearly 30 years after Judge Judy made his mother a television icon. Sheindlin remains involved as a producer, while CBS will also honor her career with the Sept. 22 special Judge Judy: Unfiltered, Unforgettable.

The judge’s Judy retirement transition feels less like a full farewell and more like a passing of the gavel. Sheindlin may no longer want to spend her days under studio lights, but she still has projects to develop, family to support, and ideas she wants audiences to hear. After almost 30 years of commanding television courtrooms, she has earned the chance to enjoy a quieter schedule. But if her next projects are any indication, Judy Sheindlin may be leaving the bench without ever truly leaving television.
