94-Year-Old John Williams Proves He’s Still Got The Force In Surprise Hollywood Bowl Appearance

Published September 11, 2026

More than 13,000 people gathered at the Hollywood Bowl to celebrate one of film music’s greatest composers, but the night delivered an extra surprise. At 94, John Williams unexpectedly stepped onto the stage on Sept. 4 and conducted one of the most recognizable pieces of music from his extraordinary career.

According to People, the legendary composer joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the encore of Maestro of the Movies: A Tribute to John Williams. He led the orchestra through the “Imperial March” from Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, giving the audience a rare chance to see the man behind the music bring Darth Vader’s famous theme to life once again.

The Hollywood Bowl later shared video of the moment, celebrating Williams’ return to a venue closely connected to his career. Although he no longer regularly conducts in public, he appeared before the packed crowd and took command of the orchestra for the dramatic Star Wars favorite. The Los Angeles Philharmonic also responded warmly online, sharing its affection for the longtime collaborator.

The appearance fit perfectly with a tribute concert built around some of cinema’s most memorable music. The program featured selections from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jaws, and Jurassic Park, along with more than 50 minutes of edited movie scenes. The concerts also highlighted music from four of Williams’ five Academy Award-winning scores and covered 37 years of his work in film.

Williams’ connection to the Hollywood Bowl dates back to the late 1970s, and the venue dedicated its stage to him in 2025. His career includes five Academy Awards for films such as Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., and Schindler’s List. He also composed music for four Olympic Games, including the “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” for the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

That longevity makes his latest appearance feel especially meaningful. Many composers create memorable scores, but few have written music that audiences can recognize within just a few notes. The “Imperial March” remains one of those pieces, instantly bringing the world of Star Wars to mind even decades after its debut. At 94, John Williams may have stepped back from regular public conducting, but the Hollywood Bowl surprise showed that his connection to audiences remains as powerful as ever. One unexpected encore was enough to remind thousands of fans how deeply his music has become woven into movie history.
