Florence Henderson shared four children—Elizabeth, Joseph, Robert, and Barbara Bernstein—with her first husband, theatrical producer Ira Bernstein. By the time she landed the role of Carol Brady in 1969, she already understood the realities of raising a family, making her television performance feel especially authentic.

The actress occasionally joked about the differences between parenting on screen and at home. She once recalled that her children asked why she seemed gentler with the Brady kids than with them. Henderson replied that the television children were characters, while her own children were the ones she wanted to grow into wonderful adults. Looking back, she proudly said they had done exactly that.
