Excitement continues to build for Practical Magic 2, but one familiar face from the original film will not be returning. Evan Rachel Wood, who played Kylie Owens in the 1998 fantasy classic, recently admitted she feels disappointed after learning the sequel would recast her role instead of inviting her back.
According to Variety, Wood’s comments have resonated with longtime fans who hoped to see the original child cast reunite alongside Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. While she understands the filmmakers’ new direction, she says missing the chance to revisit the beloved story still hurts.

Speaking at the premiere of her new series The Shards, Wood reflected on how much the original cast meant to her. She explained that growing up alongside the actors created lifelong memories, making the opportunity to reunite as adults especially meaningful.
Although she read The Book of Magic—the novel inspiring the sequel—Wood believes the filmmakers chose a different approach that no longer fit her version of the character. She also revealed that she previously offered to return even for a brief appearance but learned the production planned to recast the role instead.

Instead of Wood, Practical Magic 2 casts Joey King as the older Kylie Owens, while Maisie Williams takes over the role of Antonia Owens, originally played by Alexandra Artrip. Returning stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest will reprise their iconic roles, connecting the sequel to the beloved original.
Wood acknowledged that the creative team has every right to tell the story they envision. Still, she admitted feeling sad that neither she nor fans will experience the emotional reunion she imagined after nearly three decades. For audiences who grew up with the original film, Practical Magic 2 promises a fresh chapter, even as many continue to wonder what might have been if the original young cast had returned.
