Ron Howard Opens Up About the Regrets He Still Carries Over Brother Clint Howard’s Addiction Battle

by Ruth A

Published July 23, 2026

Ron Howard has spent decades telling powerful stories on screen, but one of his most emotional reflections came when he spoke about his family’s personal struggles; the acclaimed filmmaker recently looked back on his younger brother Clint Howard and his sibling’s battle with addiction. Ron admitted that he still carries regrets about the role he believes he played during those difficult years.

According to People, although Clint eventually overcame his addiction and rebuilt his life, Ron confessed that he sometimes wonders whether he encouraged their parents to give his younger brother too much freedom at a time when stronger intervention might have helped.

During an interview, Ron Howard and Clint Howard reflected on their childhood and the different ways their parents raised them. Ron explained that he often encouraged his parents to loosen the rules for Clint because he had found his own upbringing overly restrictive. As attitudes toward drugs changed during that era, he also believed experimentation did not necessarily signal serious trouble.

Looking back, Ron now questions that advice. He recalled watching his brother’s addiction worsen over time, leading to frightening episodes, legal problems, unsuccessful rehabilitation attempts, and periods when Clint struggled to maintain stability. Ron admitted he feared his brother might not survive, and he said those memories remain some of the most heartbreaking of his life.

Despite Ron’s lingering guilt, Clint does not blame his older brother for what happened. During his own interview, he dismissed the idea that Ron could have prevented his addiction and insisted that the choices ultimately belonged to him. He even laughed about some of Ron’s well-intentioned conversations, describing them as a little cliché but always motivated by genuine love and concern.

Today, Ron Howard and Clint Howard share the same close relationship they have enjoyed for much of their lives. Ron continues to cast his younger brother whenever the right role comes along, praising his professionalism, creativity, and reliability as an actor. Their story serves as a reminder that families often carry regrets through life’s hardest moments, but honesty, forgiveness, and unwavering support can strengthen those relationships over time.
