Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose unmistakable raspy voice powered timeless hits including “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Holding Out for a Hero” and “It’s a Heartache,” has died. She was 75. Tyler died on July 8 in a hospital near Faro, Portugal, after complications from a recent illness that included emergency intestinal surgery and weeks of intensive care, according to reports.

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Wales, Tyler launched her recording career in the 1970s before breaking through internationally with “It’s a Heartache” in 1977. She reached even greater heights in 1983 when songwriter Jim Steinman penned “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a global No. 1 hit that became one of the defining songs of the decade. She followed it with another enduring classic, “Holding Out for a Hero,” cementing her place as one of the era’s biggest rock voices.

Tyler revealed in May that she had undergone emergency intestinal surgery after becoming seriously ill while in Portugal. Doctors placed her in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery, and while her family later announced she had awakened and was slowly improving, she remained hospitalized and was forced to cancel much of her summer touring schedule. Sadly, she never fully recovered.

Tributes quickly poured in following news of her passing, with fellow musicians, fans and public figures celebrating both her extraordinary voice and her lasting impact on popular music. Tyler remained active well into her seventies, releasing new music, touring internationally and reflecting on a career that spanned more than five decades. In one of her final interviews, she spoke warmly about the joy of performing and said she never grew tired of singing the songs that made her famous.

Tyler’s signature husky voice came about almost by accident. After undergoing surgery to remove vocal nodules in the 1970s, doctors instructed her not to speak during her recovery. She ignored the advice, permanently changing her voice into the gravelly sound that became her trademark. Rather than hindering her career, it helped make her one of the most recognizable singers of her generation. Over five decades, she released 18 studio albums, earned Grammy and BRIT Award nominations, and in 2023 was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her contributions to music.

Although no song would eclipse the success of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler’s music never disappeared from popular culture. Her biggest hits continued to appear in films, television shows, sporting events and commercials, while new generations discovered her powerful voice decades after they were first released. She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan, whose steadfast support accompanied her throughout one of pop music’s most enduring careers.
