Born Margaret McCarty on May 11, 1929, in Springfield, Illinois, she faced hardship early in life after losing her mother during childbirth. She and her siblings were later adopted, and by the age of three, she had moved to Los Angeles with her adoptive family. Growing up near the heart of the entertainment industry opened doors that would lead her into show business at a young age.

In the early 1950s, Kerry auditioned for Disney’s upcoming animated adaptation of Peter Pan. She served as a live-action reference model, performing scenes that animators studied while creating Tinker Bell. Her facial expressions, body language, and graceful movements helped bring personality to the mischievous fairy who would become one of Disney’s most enduring characters.
