Elwood Edwards was a behind-the-scenes graphics and camera operator at Cleveland’s television station WKYC when he got his shot at fame thanks to his wife, Karen. The outlet recently announced his death at 74, noting that he had been ill for years.
While many may not recognize his face, Elwood was the famous voice behind America Online (AOL) email greeting, which states, “You’ve got mail.” He also voiced three other phrases for the platform, including “Welcome,” “Files done,” and “Goodbye.”
Elwood Edwards, the memorable voice behind AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail”
The voice actor got his start in 1989, after which he performed on shows like The Simpsons and You’ve Got Mail’s movie ad in the 2000s. This big break came after Elwood’s multi-faceted career run as a live booth announcer, a news reporter, and a weatherman. His employers at WKYC testified to his jack-of-all-trade nature, noting that he enjoyed taking on extra roles.
In 2016, Elwood raised concerns after a fan spotted him working as an Uber driver. “That dude isn’t making enough,” someone replied. A few deals and ads later, following his appearance, Elwood came down with an illness that eventually took his life days ago.
How did Elwood Edwards get the job at AOL?
Elwood’s wife Karen was working at AOL when she overheard the CEO at the time, Steve Case, talking about adding a voice to their next software. She immediately made a shot for Elwood, who recorded phrases on his cassette deck that would eventually become popular and associated with him for life.
The late voice-over artist admitted to being shocked about the outcome of his brief job, noting that he once saw a stack of AOL CDs at CompUSA and felt proud of himself. He remained relevant for decades, even up to 2022, when he collaborated with Shopify for a TV ad. He is survived by his kids, Sallie, Heather and Bill, and his granddaughter.
