Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon are bringing back the colors of the ‘80s. All the colors – and then some. With many nostalgic and vibrant Christmas trends gradually dwindling, the two actresses and longtime friends enjoyed a holiday together that was overflowing with sparkles, mismatched decor, and a dazzling wardrobe malfunction.
The holidays are to be spent with loved ones and that’s exactly what Dern and Witherspoon did, years into their deeply-cultivated friendship. With Dern being known for dramas like Wild Heart and Mask, and of course Jurassic Park, it’s easy to miss where she might have crossed paths with the Legally Blonde icon. But dramas are very much in Witherspoon’s wheelhouse too, and the two worked together in 2014 and have been nearly inseparable since – especially for the holidays, and this year was one to remember.

As the Christmas weekend approached, Witherspoon took to Instagram to share photos of her holiday party with Dern. “Spreading Holiday joy,” she captioned the festive post, before tiredly adding, “it’s exhausting.”

The first picture shows the two women twinning in white sweaters and ankle-length skirts shimmering in glitter. The plain colors of their clothing is a stark contrast to the explosion of color that is the Christmas tree behind them, all multi-colored lights, shining tinsel, and oversized ornaments. It’s a move completely in the opposite direction of the millennial beige Christmas trend that’s gone viral on TikTok, but the two were just getting started with the holiday fun – maybe a little too much fun, though.
Witherspoon and Dern are friends to the end
Witherspoon’s post tells quite the story, as the second picture shows the two formally sparkling ladies are then shown to be completely exhausted and disheveled. Gone are the lights, colors, and smiles -and off are their high-heeled shoes in favor of going barefoot. The silly moment is just the latest in their long history as friends.
2014’s Wild saw these two stars formally cross paths as co-stars in the drama, and they made sure to never drift apart since. This is especially ironic in recent years as the two also play arch-rivals in the television series Big Little Lies.
The antagonism does not extend beyond the studio, however. In fact, in a 2022 Instagram post featuring the two actresses, Witherspoon warned, “If you mess with her, you mess with me. It’s a package deal.”
