Actress, dancer, mother. Catherine Zeta-Jones is a woman of many hats, including that of a singer! Recently, Catherine shared footage of herself tapping into her Welsh roots by singing some Welsh songs alongside her friends. It’s a pleasant surprise for fans and it got an equally fun reception from Catherine’s son, 23-year-old Dylan, whom she shares with fellow actor Michael Douglas.
She’s had a diverse list of roles over the years, but Catherine actually hails from Swansea, South Wales, the daughter of a sweets factory owner and a seamstress. She spent her formative years in the Mumbles district of Swansea and was sent to Hazel Johnson School of Dance. In addition to English, Catherine speaks French and Welsh – the latter of which she sounds positively harmonious in!

On Thursday, December 14, Catherine took to Instagram to post footage of a moment shared between herself and her friends. “When my Welsh friends get together at my house, we always end up here,” Catherine wrote in the captions, “Singing Welsh songs to Americans who can’t understand but love it all the same.”

She continued, “Flashback to thanksgiving chez moi. I love you my Welsh lambs you too my NewJerseyans and Americans, oops, and a lone Canadian.”
The camera pans around to show the group of friends singing together, some arm in arm, with Catherine at the front, channeling her inner Tony winner with arms outstretched, putting her whole body into the musical number. The camera also shows the American onlooker, Dylan himself, watching in appreciative amazement.
Catherine Zeta-Jones embraces her Welsh pride with more than singing
These days, Catherine usually calls Westchester, New York her home base, where she’s raised son Dylan and daughter Carys. But she still holds her love of Wales tenderly in her heart.
Last autumn, Catherine shared a photo of Kate Middleton after the duchess became stylized as Catherine, Princess of Wales. The picture showed the princess hugging a 2-year-old girl named Charlotte in Welsh national costume.
“I love our Princess of Wales,” Catherine gushed. “I love our Welsh National Costume.”
She’s received plenty of praise and honors from her country too. In 2011, she was named a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). Then, in 2019, she was given the Freedom of the City of Swansea award for the city’s 50th birthday celebration. She has been recognized for her contributions to film and to charitable causes.
