Gavin MacLeod died on Saturday morning at his Palm Desert, California home. He had been surrounded by his loved ones and caretakers at the time of his passing. MacLeod’s nephew, Mark See, confirmed the news to TMZ.
MacLeod was an actor known for his roles on The Love Boat and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He had been active from 1955 to 2017 and passed away at the age of 90 years old. Other roles put him alongside Dick Van Dyke and Raymond Burr.

Gavin MacLeod is perhaps best known for a recurring role on The Love Boat, playing Captain Merrill Stubing from 1977 to 1987, for a total of 250 episodes. He’s additionally known for playing Murray Slaughter for 168 episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He had the key role of playing the head writer at the station Mary worked for.

TMZ reports MacLeod had been in and out of the hospital recently for varying illnesses and, according to his nephew, had loved ones and caretakers around him near his final hours. Currently, there’s no official word on the exact cause of death. However, his ex-wife Joan Devore confirmed it was not related to COVID-19.

In total, MacLeod’s filmography has some hundreds of titles to his name, making him a defining part of the entertainment history through the last century. He is survived by wife Patti and four children and grandchildren.
