Study Shows Red Wine Might Contain Heart-Healthy Benefits

If you’re a wine lover, you’ll be happy to hear this! Red wine may have heart-healthy benefits that deter from cardiovascular disease. The reason behind this is because red wine is jam-packed with antioxidants, but it should still be consumed in moderation regardless. The antioxidants, in turn, may lower the risk of coronary artery disease as well. It’s also full of the “good” cholesterol that blocks against bad cholesterol buildup.

Resveratrol is a substance that is found in red wine. It helps prevent damage to blood vessels, reduces bad cholesterol, and prevents blood clots. However, more solid research is needed before assuming that resveratrol can lower the risk of inflammation and blood clotting.

A study was performed on the correlation between red wine and cardiovascular health by T.S. Mohamed Saleem and S. Darbar Basha. In the study, they considered the health benefits of red wine and their effects on reducing different types of heart disease. The two concluded the study by confirming that moderate intake of red wine might be helpful in preventive care for those who are already presenting active cardiovascular risk factors.

However, the consumption of any alcohol is not recommended for those who have suffered alcohol abuse or have the tendency to. Mayo Clinic has reported that not only does red wine have heart-healthy benefits, but all types of alcohol do. It is thought that all alcohols behave in the same way as red wine benefits.

This includes raising HDL (healthy) cholesterol, reducing the formation of blood clots, helping prevent artery damage caused by high levels of LDL (harmful) cholesterol and the potential improvement of the functionality of the layer of cells that line your blood vessels (endothelium).

Medical professionals don’t suggest heavy drinking, as it can lead to potentially life-threatening side effects. This includes liver and pancreas disease, high blood pressure, heart failure, and more. It’s important that if you’re looking to enjoy a glass of wine with friends or family, to keep it in moderation.

Both the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommend not using alcohol for preventive care. Before taking any sort of supplement to combat health issues, contact your healthcare professional.
