The Most Memorable Mothers In Movie History

With Mothers Day right this weekend, we wanted to take a trip down memory lane from the 1960's all the way to the 1990's, to take look back on some of the staff picks from doyouremember.com 's favorite motherly roles in film, throughout the years. 1.) Rusty Dennis, played by Cher (1985) Although she isn't particularly anyone's vision of the perfect mother, judging by her desire for drugs, biker gangs, and living life on the wild side. But as the mother of a teenage son (played by Eric Stoltz) with a vicious physical deformity in 1985's Mask, You definitely don't want to be on this character bad side in a fight. Throughout the film, Rusty stands up to various authority figures who want her son to be treated like a freak. She faces (by herself) doctors, teachers, and other bullies. She loves and defends her son endlessly, so much to the point in which he doesn’t ever need his own defense mechanisms; he’s free to be himself. 2.) Rosemary Woodhouse, played by Mia Farrow (1968) Novelist Ira Levin nailed the feel of the fears, insecurities and doubts of a woman's first pregnancy in the source novel for this disturbing horror film by Roman Polanski, and Mia Farrow is genius as the increasingly terrified young soon-to-be-mother. Her maternal instinct takes control, even when she learns who the real father is... 3.) Wendy Torrance, played by Shelley Duvall (1980) She’s a gentle and certainly wouldn't hurt a fly, but Wendy Torrance still gets the better (or worse) of her insane husband (Jack Nicholson), swinging at him with a baseball bat, stabbing him in the hand at one point, and finally leaving him to freeze to the point of hypothermia. Talk about rising to the occasion in order to protect her son! 4.) Bambi’s mother in Bambi, played by Paula Winslowe (1942) The majestic doe of the forest teaches her young son everything he needs to know about the rules of the forest, and she even dies saving him from a hunter's gunshot when her son is just a baby. Watching the death of Bambi’s mother is a traumatizing experience for all children all over the world, ever since the the animated film was first debuted in 1942. This is the first inkling of what it might feel like to lose one's own mother for many children. In the second Bambi film, she appears to her son in a reverie, telling him that "everything will be alright," something we all need to hear from mom every once in a while. In the movie, Aurora is an almost too loving mother to her daughter Emma, causing Emma to move far, far away. But as the film progresses, mother and daughter soon realize that they need each other more than the men in their lives. 6.) Beatrice Henderson, played by Debbie Reynolds (1996 ) In the film Mother, a depressed novelist John (Albert Brooks,) bites the bullet and moves back in with his retired mom, Beatrice (Debbie Reynolds). She’s is always unknowingly annoying him with embarrassing criticisms, suggestions and too much information about his late father and her love life. However, no matter how much her aggravating persona carries on, there are definitely obvious traits revealed of that loving mother, just worried about her son! 7.) Charlotte Haze played by Shelley Winters (1962 ) In another Stanley Kubrick classic/adaptation of a famous novel (in this case written by Vladamir Nabokov), entitled Lolita, Shelley Winters’s paints the perfect portrait of a generic social-climbing suburban mom. 8.) Doris Mann, played by Shirley Maclaine (1991) In this adaptation of the famous Carrie Fisher novel with the same title, Postcards From The Edge stars Meryl Streep as Suzanne Vale, a star whose career is plummeting due to drugs. After doing some time in rehab, Suzanne ends up living back at home with her mother, Doris Mann (Shirley MacLaine). The film focuses onthe complicated but loving relationship between an struggling actress and her successful movie star mother. Lacille LaRusso, played by Randy Heller (1984) In the original 1984 martial-arts drama The Karate Kid, Danny LaRusso's mother is a computer programmer and restaurant manager in training. Soon the two leave the dirty streets of Newark, NJ, so she can work a computer job in California,. Throughout Daniel’s adventures in the movie, Lucille is always there to provide her teenage boy all the support he needs to be successful. When Lucille’s computer job doesn't work out, she swiftly finds a job opening at a local restaurant and is soon made into a manager. Margaret White, played by Piper Laurie (1976 ) Abuse and a religion obsessive, Margaret White is the best mother villain character. The blood imagery runs deep in this supernatural thriller, blaming her daughter's period on the devil and more, one can only predict that she'd literally stab her daughter in the back by the end!
