81-Year-Old Deep Purple Singer Ian Gillan Hospitalized After ‘Medical Emergency’ Forces Band To Postpone Shows

Deep Purple postponed two German concerts after Ian Gillan, 81, was hospitalized. Here is what the band said, and what he revealed about retiring.

Deep Purple fans in Germany were already in their seats, figuratively speaking, when the news came on Halloween. The band announced it could not play the QI Arena in Leipzig that night or the Sporthalle in Hamburg the next evening, and the reason was one nobody wanted to read. “This comes as a result of a medical emergency involving Ian Gillan, which has resulted in his current hospitalisation,” the band said in a statement reported by NME and Louder.

Gillan, the voice behind “Smoke on the Water” and “Child in Time,” is 81. He was born on August 19, 1945, in Chiswick, west London, and he has fronted Deep Purple for most of the last six decades. What makes the news land harder is something he said almost exactly a year ago, and it is worth hearing in his own words before anyone jumps to conclusions.

What Has Deep Purple Said About Ian Gillan’s Medical Emergency?

So far, the band has shared no further details about the emergency or Gillan’s condition. As of Monday, November 2, Deep Purple’s October 31 statement remains the latest update on its official website and social channels.

There is, however, one encouraging sign for fans with tickets to the next shows. Deep Purple’s official tour calendar now marks the November 1 Hamburg concert as canceled, while the November 3 show at Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle and the November 4 date at Berlin’s Uber Arena remain listed with tickets available. Both venues also continue to list the concerts as scheduled. The band has not said whether Gillan has left the hospital or been cleared to perform, so the dates remain subject to change.

The tour does not have much breathing room. Rolling Stone Germany reported that it was still unclear whether the Dortmund show on November 3 and the Berlin date on November 4 would go ahead. The band has British dates booked from November 18 to 25 before heading to South America and Mexico in December. For a singer who has been on the road almost without pause since the late 1960s, a hospital bed in Germany is a rare stop.

That is why fans keep returning to an interview he gave last fall.

What Did Ian Gillan Say About His Eyesight And Retiring?

Wikipedia

In November 2025, Gillan told Uncut magazine that his vision was failing. “I’ve only got 30 percent vision. That won’t get better,” he said, in remarks reported by Blabbermouth and Ultimate Classic Rock. He added a line that sounded like a man who had already thought it through. “I think if I lose my energy I’m going to stop. I don’t want to be an embarrassment to anyone.”

Headlines turned that into “retirement is not far off,” and Gillan did not love it. In July he set the record straight with The Independent. “I didn’t say that at all, and I never did say that,” he said, as Blabbermouth reported. “What I said was when I felt I didn’t have the strength, then I would retire. And I also said my eyesight was failing… Well, I don’t sing through my eyes.”

It is a very Gillan answer, dry and stubborn, and he backed it up on stage. In August he stood next to Ritchie Blackmore at Jones Beach for “Smoke on the Water,” the first time the founding guitarist had played with the band since 1993. “It was an absolute pleasure to have back on stage the founding member, the great legend, the immortal Ritchie Blackmore,” Gillan said afterward.

Why Does Ian Gillan’s Voice Matter So Much To Rock Fans?

If you bought a rock record in the early 1970s, there is a good chance Gillan was on it, even if you did not know it. Before most Americans could name him, he sang the role of Jesus on the original 1970 album of Jesus Christ Superstar. Tim Rice cast him after hearing “Child in Time,” and Gillan cut his vocals in about three hours. He later turned down the movie and the stage show, explaining that he was a musician first.

Then came the night that gave rock its most famous riff. On December 4, 1971, the band was in Montreux, Switzerland, to record, and went to see Frank Zappa and the Mothers at the town’s casino. Someone in the crowd fired a flare gun, the building burned to the ground, and the “Funky Claude” of the lyrics was Claude Nobs, the festival founder who helped pull people out. Gillan sang about all of it on “Smoke on the Water,” and generations of teenagers learned those four notes on their first guitar. It is no surprise the band sits high on our list of the top hard rock bands of the 1970s.

His road has had more turns than most. He walked away from Deep Purple in 1973, came back in 1984 for Perfect Strangers, and in between spent a year as the singer for Black Sabbath on Born Again. In 2016 the band was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Metallica’s Lars Ulrich giving the speech.

Through all of it, the one constant was that voice, and the stubborn man behind it who once said he would only stop when the energy ran out. Fans are holding him to that promise now. We will update this story as soon as the band shares more about how he is doing.
