For years, fans of The Golden Girls have had reruns and streaming to keep Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia close. With all four original stars gone and the show’s creator previously ruling out a traditional reboot, another television revival seemed unlikely.
According to CheatSheet, now, however, the Golden Girls comeback is happening in a very different form. The beloved foursome has been reimagined as amateur detectives in a growing series of mystery books, and another entry is already on the way.
Golden Girls Comeback Continues With a New Mystery Book
Author Rachel Ekstrom Courage launched the literary revival in April 2025 with Murder by Cheesecake: A Golden Girls Cozy Mystery. The story placed the familiar characters inside a murder mystery involving Dorothy, a dead date, and a St. Olaf-themed wedding. A second installment, Death on the Lanai, followed in June 2026 and also became a New York Times bestseller.
Courage is now changing the formula slightly. Her next book, Who Ate the Last Slice of Cheesecake?, is scheduled for May 11, 2027. Instead of one full-length mystery, the book will feature 10 shorter solve-along mysteries, along with recipes and an answer key. Readers will be able to tackle the stories in any order, giving the series a more interactive twist.
The Original Series Still Has Remarkable Staying Power
The Golden Girls comeback works because the original show still carries enormous nostalgic appeal. Its mix of quick-witted humor, late-night cheesecake conversations, and surprisingly thoughtful storylines helped the sitcom outlive its original run and find new audiences through reruns and streaming. The four actresses who made the series iconic are no longer alive. Estelle Getty, who played Sophia, died in 2008. Bea Arthur, remembered as Dorothy, died in 2009, followed by Rue McClanahan, who played Blanche, in 2010. Betty White remained the last surviving member of the original quartet until her death on Dec. 31, 2021, shortly before her 100th birthday.
That makes the new books feel less like a replacement for the series and more like another way to revisit its familiar world. Instead of trying to recreate the original chemistry on television, the mystery series gives fans fresh stories while keeping the personalities and humor they remember at the center. More than 30 years after the sitcom ended, Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia are still finding new ways into fans’ lives. This time, though, they are trading the lanai for clues, suspects, and cheesecake-fueled mysteries.
