Alan Alda Opens Up About The Daily Frustrations Of Parkinson’s And His Joyful Go-To Weapon Against It

Alan Alda has lived with Parkinson’s disease for years, but the MASH* legend refuses to let the diagnosis define him. At 90, he continues to work, record his podcast, and approach the everyday difficulties caused by the disease with persistence and, whenever possible, humor.

According to Yahoo Entertainment, during a new CBS Sunday Morning interview, Alda described his philosophy in characteristically playful terms. Speaking about Alan Alda Parkinson, he joked, “It’s not who I am. It’s just a hobby.” Behind the humor, however, he also offered a candid look at the ordinary tasks that have become more difficult.

Alda said using a computer can turn into a battle when his hand does not move the cursor where he intends. He has jokingly nicknamed the interference “Dr. Parkinson,” especially when the cursor moves unexpectedly or causes him to delete something he wanted to keep.

Other struggles prove more frustrating. His wife, Arlene, sometimes helps him button his shirt, and Alda admitted that he dislikes needing assistance with something so basic. Instead of immediately accepting defeat, he keeps trying new methods and asks himself, “What haven’t I tried?” Even successfully putting on his own socks has become an accomplishment worth celebrating.

He Noticed an Unusual Warning Sign Before His Diagnosis

Alda publicly revealed his diagnosis in 2018, about three and a half years after doctors first identified it. His path to diagnosis began when he acted out a dream and later learned that this could be linked to Parkinson’s. He asked doctors to evaluate him before noticing typical symptoms. Years later, after spotting his thumb twitching during TV appearances, he chose to disclose the condition before viewers began speculating.

Alan Alda’s journey with Parkinson’s has not stopped his creative work. He still hosts Clear+Vivid and continues supporting science communication through the Alan Alda Center at Stony Brook University. Humor remains one of his strongest coping tools and part of his nearly 70-year marriage to Arlene. Decades after M*A*S*H ended, fans still tell Alda that Hawkeye Pierce inspired them to pursue medicine. His openness about Parkinson’s now adds another chapter to that legacy, centered on adapting rather than giving up.
