Michael J. Fox Honored With One Of Canada’s Highest Distinctions For Parkinson’s Work

by Ruth A

Published October 6, 2026

Michael J. Fox returned to his home country for a meaningful celebration of both his Canadian roots and decades of Parkinson’s advocacy. The Back to the Future star appeared at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Oct. 2 as Canada promoted him to companion of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor.

According to People, the latest Fox award recognizes a journey that has extended far beyond his beloved film and television roles. Since publicly revealing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, the 65-year-old actor has devoted much of his public life to raising awareness, supporting research, and giving hope to others living with the disease.

Governor General Louise Arbour presented Fox with the companion-level honor during a ceremony that included 51 Canadians receiving inductions or promotions within the Order of Canada. Officials praised Fox for his global advocacy and his openness about living with Parkinson’s, while also highlighting the research work he has supported through his foundation.

Fox became an officer of the Order of Canada in 2011, and officials announced his promotion to companion earlier in 2026. After the ceremony, the Edmonton-born actor spoke warmly about his connection to Canada, reflecting on the country’s culture and the values he absorbed while growing up there. He described himself as “uniquely Canadian” after a lifetime shaped by those experiences.

Fox revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998 after initially keeping it private out of concern over how audiences might react. He later said their support encouraged him to keep working and reminded him that the disease could not take away his ability to connect through acting. In 2000, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has since directed more than $3 billion toward Parkinson’s research. The Canadian honor follows another major Fox award moment in September, when he received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the Emmys and thanked wife Tracy Pollan and their four children for their support.

For longtime fans, the honors add another chapter to a career that includes Back to the Future, Family Ties, and Spin City. In recent years, Fox has increasingly used his platform beyond Hollywood through books, public speaking, and the 2023 documentary Still. Although Parkinson’s has made public appearances more difficult, he continues to support research and advocacy. His latest Canadian honor recognizes both the beloved actor and the advocate who turned a personal challenge into a worldwide mission.
