86-Year-Old Tom Jones Says He Was Fired From ‘The Voice’ After 13 Seasons: ‘I Did Not Want To Leave’

by Ruth A

Published September 16, 2026

After more than a decade in one of television’s most recognizable red chairs, Tom Jones says his time as a full-time coach on The Voice UK did not end by choice. The 86-year-old singer revealed that ITV decided not to bring him back for Season 15 after 13 seasons on the competition series.

According to People, Jones made it clear that he still loved the show and its audience. According to the Welsh music legend, the network blamed financial difficulties involving insurance and later framed the decision as part of an effort to refresh the coaching lineup.

In an Instagram post, Jones said ITV had apparently made the decision some time before informing him. He explained that the network offered him a much smaller role that would involve occasional appearances rather than participation from the beginning of the season, an arrangement that did not appeal to him.

He ended his message with characteristic humor, noting that there is never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who still believes he is doing the job well. A spokesperson for The Voice UK said the show had loved working with Jones and confirmed that discussions continue about some form of involvement in the next series.

His Red Chair Became Part of the Show’s Identity

Jones joined The Voice UK when the series launched in 2012 and remained a familiar presence through nearly its entire run, missing only one season. His long tenure allowed viewers to see a different side of the singer behind classics such as “It’s Not Unusual,” “Delilah,” and “What’s New Pussycat?” as he mentored younger performers and shared stories from his own decades in music.

Reports have suggested that Cheryl could take over his chair for Season 15, while rapper Aitch may also join the panel, though ITV has not officially announced the lineup. Whatever comes next, Jones’ departure marks the end of a long chapter for the series. For viewers who became accustomed to seeing him turn his chair, offer advice, and occasionally break into song, The Voice UK will inevitably look a little different without Tom Jones sitting at the center of the action.
