Instead, the former bandmates joined artist Robert Vargas for a conversation about music, creativity, and how personal experience shapes art. Footage from the event later surfaced online, giving fans their first extended look at the longtime bandmates sharing a public stage since Van Halen played its final concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 4, 2015.
Their conversation naturally wandered back to Van Halen. Roth discussed his approach to writing “Panama,” while Alex reflected on how the group benefited from each member contributing different creative instincts. Roth also joked about the pair’s famous disagreements, recalling how intensely they could argue over set lists. The relaxed exchange offered a rare glimpse of two musicians whose creative friction helped shape some of hard rock’s most enduring songs.
Their Shared History Has Included Friendship, Conflict, and Loss
The reunion felt especially notable because Roth and Alex have not always seen eye to eye. A proposed Van Halen tribute tour in 2022 never came together after tensions reportedly flared between them over how the shows should honor Eddie Van Halen, Alex’s brother and the band’s legendary guitarist, who died in 2020. Despite those disagreements, the two musicians remained in contact.
