Chris Farley’s Wild Hank Williams Jr. Impression Has To Be Seen To Be Believed

Nearly three decades later, one of Chris Farley’s memorable Saturday Night Live performances is giving fans another reason to remember his larger-than-life comedy. During an October 1997 episode, Farley transformed into country music legend Hank Williams Jr. for an exaggerated take on the singer and his famous connection to Monday Night Football.

According to Whiskeyriff, the vintage Chris Farley-Hank Williams Jr. sketch featured everything audiences came to expect from the comedian, including an over-the-top costume, booming vocals, and plenty of physical energy. Looking back at the performance carries added emotion because Farley died just two months after the episode aired.

Farley hosted the October 1997 episode after previously spending five seasons as an SNL cast member. In the sketch, he dressed in a cowboy hat and other clothing inspired by Williams as he entered a recording studio to add more vocals to the country star’s Monday Night Football theme. The setup gave Farley plenty of opportunities to unleash his signature high-energy comedy.

Will Ferrell, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, and Colin Quinn also appeared in the sketch. Farley repeatedly delivered the familiar football catchphrase while putting his own exaggerated spin on Williams’ distinctive voice and personality. The impersonation leaned heavily into Farley’s ability to turn simple movements and vocal choices into an outsized comedic performance.

The football connection made Williams an easy target for parody. His reworked “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” became closely associated with Monday Night Football in 1989 and remained part of the broadcast for years. For Farley, the episode came during the final months of his life. He died on December 18, 1997, at 33 from an accidental drug overdose, ending a career that had already produced some of Saturday Night Live’s most memorable characters.

Farley joined SNL in 1990 and became known for throwing his entire body into a joke. Characters like Matt Foley established him as a fearless physical comedian, while films such as Tommy Boy and Black Sheep brought that energy to the big screen. Watching the Chris Farley/Hank Williams Jr. impression today captures his willingness to fully commit to even the most ridiculous character. Nearly 30 years after his death, moments like this show why his brief career left such a lasting impression.
