77-Year-Old ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Battling Serious Health Issues As He Steps Away From Touring

by Ruth A

Published August 11, 2026

ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard is reportedly dealing with serious health problems after stepping away from the legendary rock band’s current tour. His absence follows the cancellation of the group’s August 5 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. At the time, the band cited “unforeseen personnel matters” and obstacles they could not overcome.

According to Consequence, the latest, Frank Beard’s health concerns came less than a year after the longtime drummer returned to performing following previous medical issues. ZZ Top plans to continue its summer tour without Beard for the time being. As a result, guitarist and singer Billy Gibbons is now the only member of the band’s classic lineup currently performing on the road.

Reports indicate that Beard is facing serious health issues, although specific details about his condition remain private. Michael Monahan has taken his place behind the drums and is expected to continue filling in during upcoming performances. ZZ Top had planned to begin its headlining summer tour at the Hollywood Bowl on August 5. However, the group canceled that performance before continuing with its remaining dates.

This is also not the first time Frank Beard’s health problems have interrupted his touring schedule. In 2025, foot and ankle issues forced him to take time away from the band. His longtime drum technician, John Douglas, initially stepped in, while Monahan also performed in Beard’s place. By September 2025, Beard had recovered enough to return to the group. He continued performing with his bandmates until this latest setback forced another absence.

Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969 and became an essential part of the lineup that transformed the Texas group into rock legends. Alongside Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill, he helped create the blues-rock sound that defined the band for generations. Songs such as “La Grange,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’” became some of their best-known hits. Their success eventually earned ZZ Top induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

The band has already experienced a significant lineup change following Hill’s death in 2021. Elwood Francis, Hill’s longtime guitar technician, subsequently took over bass duties. Now, Beard’s absence means Gibbons remains the only classic member appearing in ZZ Top’s current touring lineup. Despite the setback, the group intends to keep performing, with shows scheduled through October 9. Fans will undoubtedly continue hoping for positive news about Frank Beard’s health and a possible return for the drummer who has spent more than five decades behind the kit.
