Vivian Vance, who reportedly did not recognize Frawley, made an offhand remark about the older actor when she learned he would play her television husband. Frawley overheard the comment and, according to Mark, never forgot it.
Although the two performers delivered one of television’s most memorable sitcom marriages, their relationship off camera remained strained. Writers even leaned into the tension by giving Fred and Ethel plenty of humorous arguments. After I Love Lucy ended, William Frawley joined the cast of My Three Sons as Bub O’Casey. At the same time, Vivian Vance was working nearby on The Lucy Show. Because the productions filmed on neighboring soundstages, Frawley found opportunities to continue teasing his former co-star from a distance.
Barry and Stanley Livingston, who played Ernie and Chip Douglas, later recalled helping Frawley with one memorable prank. Following his instructions, they gathered empty metal film canisters and dropped them near Vance’s soundstage, creating a loud crash before quickly running away. The brothers later remembered the moment as a harmless adventure and said they enjoyed joining what felt like one of Frawley’s playful missions. While the feud became part of classic television lore, fans continue to remember William Frawley most for the unforgettable characters he brought to life and the lasting laughter he gave audiences across generations.
