On Dan Aykroyd’s Birthday, Revisiting His Strangest Ghost Encounter

by Ruth A

Published July 2, 2026

Dan Aykroyd built a career entertaining audiences with supernatural comedy, but his fascination with the paranormal extends far beyond the Ghostbusters films. Long before fans began associating him with ghost-hunting adventures on screen, the actor had already developed a genuine interest in unexplained phenomena.

According to Far Out Magazine, over the years, Aykroyd has shared several stories about unusual experiences he believes happened in real life. One of the most memorable involved a night in a Hollywood home when he woke up convinced an unseen presence had climbed into bed beside him.

According to Dan Aykroyd, the house where the incident occurred had once belonged to singer Mama Cass Elliot of The Mamas & the Papas. Although she did not die there, he believed her spirit—and possibly another unidentified presence—remained connected to the property. He also claimed that members of the household reported unexplained events, including objects moving on their own, doors opening and closing, and mysterious touches when no one else was nearby.

The actor described one particularly unusual afternoon when he had been napping alone. He said he woke in a hazy, dreamlike state and noticed the bedroom door opening. Looking toward the bed, he recalled seeing what appeared to be an impression in the mattress, as though someone had just climbed in beside him. Whether it was a paranormal encounter or the effects of being only partially awake, Aykroyd has long considered it one of the strangest moments of his life.

Rather than reacting with fear, Aykroyd later recounted the story with the same humor that has made him famous. He joked that he simply rolled over and decided to “snuggle” with the unseen visitor, adding a lighthearted twist to an experience that many people would have found frightening. His playful retelling reflected his ability to blend comedy with his sincere curiosity about the paranormal.

For decades, Dan Aykroyd has openly discussed his interest in ghosts, UFOs, and unexplained mysteries, making the subject a recurring part of both his career and personal life. While skeptics point to sleep paralysis or vivid dreams as possible explanations for the incident, others enjoy the story as another example of Hollywood’s enduring fascination with ghost tales. Whatever the truth may be, the unusual encounter remains one of the actor’s most talked-about real-life paranormal stories.
