Liza Minnelli Dishes On Working With ‘Downright Rude’ Gene Hackman In New Memoir

by Ruth A

Published March 11, 2026

Few performers have lived a Hollywood life as colorful and star-filled as Liza Minnelli and Gene Hackman. Over the decades, Minnelli worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment, building friendships and professional relationships that shaped her legendary career. Now, in her new memoir, the Oscar-winning performer is opening up about some of those memories—including a more difficult experience on set.

The stories come from her new book, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!, where Minnelli shares behind-the-scenes moments from her time in film and music. Among the revelations are her reflections on working with Liza Minnelli and Gene Hackman during the production of the 1975 movie Lucky Lady, a film that brought together several well-known stars of the era.

In her memoir, Minnelli and Hackman appear together in a chapter discussing the production of Lucky Lady, a Prohibition-era comedy-drama that also starred Burt Reynolds. The film follows a widow who becomes involved in alcohol smuggling alongside two men, creating a tense and complicated love triangle.

According to Yahoo Entertainment, Minnelli recalled that the working relationship between Liza Minnelli and Gene Hackman was far from easy. She wrote that the chemistry between them felt absent during filming, which made the experience difficult. Minnelli added that director Stanley Donen later confirmed publicly that Hackman had been dismissive toward her on set. Reflecting on that time, she admitted, “It’s hard to go to work when the chemistry is absent,” and said she believed Hackman could be “downright rude.”

Despite the star power behind it, Lucky Lady failed to resonate with audiences after its release. The film struggled at the box office and received mixed responses from critics. One review at the time even described the movie as “ridiculous without the compensation of being funny or fun,” showing just how challenging the project became.

Still, the memoir does not focus only on difficult moments. Minnelli and Hackman appear among many stories Minnelli shares about the remarkable figures who crossed her path throughout her life. She also writes about her childhood surrounded by famous performers, including the close relationship between her mother, Judy Garland, and singer Frank Sinatra. Through these reflections, Minnelli offers readers a rare glimpse into the complicated and fascinating world of classic Hollywood.
