Lauren Ann Chapin, the actress best known for playing Kathy “Kitten” Anderson on the classic 1950s sitcom Father Knows Best, died on February 24, at the age of 80, after a long battle with cancer, her son Matthew announced on social media. Her death was confirmed by family members who shared a statement on Facebook about her passing after several years of illness.
In the statement, her son wrote that his mother had fought the disease for about five years and that the time had come for her to pass. He asked for privacy and support for the family during their grief, noting that the loss was “incredibly tough” for those close to her.
A new star begins to rise
Chapin was born May 23, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, and began acting as a child along with her older brothers, Michael and Billy Chapin, both of whom also worked in film and television. She made her first screen appearance in an uncredited role in the 1954 version of A Star Is Born, then was cast that same year as the youngest daughter Kathy “Kitten” Anderson in Father Knows Best.
Father Knows Best aired on CBS from 1954 to 1960, and Chapin appeared in 196 of the show’s 203 episodes as the precocious youngest child of Jim and Margaret Anderson. For her work, she earned five Junior Emmy Awards during her time on the series. After the original run ended, she reprised the role in television movies related to the show in 1977.
The life of Lauren Chapin outside of the classic series
After Father Knows Best, Chapin’s acting work became sporadic, with roles in films such as The Amorous Adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza (1976) and occasional television appearances. Later in life, she published a memoir, Father Does Know Best, and worked in various fields, including as a natural childbirth coach, at a brokerage firm, and mentoring younger performers. She was also ordained as an evangelist and was active in religious and advocacy work.
Chapin is survived by her son, Matthew, and daughter, Summer. She was preceded in death by her brother Billy Chapin, who died in 2016, and is remembered for her defining role as “Kitten” on a television series that became part of the mid-20th-century American cultural landscape.
