Danica McKellar will always be remembered as Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years, the girl next door who captured Kevin Arnold’s heart. But after the beloved series ended in 1993, McKellar stepped away from acting to find out who she really was. She shared her journey on a recent episode of Hey Dude… The 90s Called! and explained how mathematics gave her a new sense of purpose.
For years, fans approached her with the same question: “Aren’t you that girl, Winnie?” While Danica McKellar was grateful for the show’s popularity, she admitted that it was also limiting. As a teenager, she was searching for her own identity, but the world kept defining her by a role that no longer existed. Heading to UCLA gave her the chance to explore life outside of Hollywood.
Discovering A Love For Math
At college, Danica challenged herself by enrolling in a math class. She thought she had failed the first exam, only to later learn that her score was one of the highest. The experience erased her self-doubt and gave her confidence in her abilities. She eventually majored in mathematics and even co-authored a theorem during her studies.
Reports from People notes McKellar recalled how liberating it felt to be recognized for her academic achievement rather than her television fame. “This is just me and my brain who did this,” she said. That moment marked a turning point in how she viewed herself and her future.
Finding Balance Between Acting And Writing
Though she loved math, Danica McKellar decided not to become a full-time mathematician. Instead, she combined her talents, returning to acting while also writing books that made math approachable for kids and adults. Her debut book, Math Doesn’t Suck, was followed by several others, and her twelfth title, I Love You 100: A Counting Book Full of Love, is set to release this November.
For McKellar, writing math books has been both grounding and rewarding. “It’s something that I can do something about,” she explained. By blending Hollywood with her passion for numbers, Danica McKellar has built a career that’s uniquely her own—one that continues to inspire fans who first met her as Winnie Cooper.
