Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most enduring stars. Robert Redford, the legendary actor known for classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Out of Africa, has died at age 89. His passing has left a deep mark on the industry and on those who knew him personally, including longtime friend and collaborator Jane Fonda.
The pair shared more than six decades of friendship, working together on films that have become cinematic staples. In a heartfelt statement following Robert Redford’s death, Fonda said, “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.” According to People, Redford died on September 16 at his Sundance home in Utah, surrounded by his family.
A Bond Forged On Screen
Fonda and Redford first appeared together in 1960’s Tall Story before reuniting in The Chase and the beloved romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park. Their natural chemistry carried over into later projects like The Electric Horseman and, decades later, Our Souls at Night in 2017. Each collaboration deepened their connection, creating one of Hollywood’s most lasting screen partnerships.
While the pair never pursued romance, Fonda admitted she was often smitten. She revealed in past interviews that she “was always in love with Robert Redford” and joked that she developed a crush on him during every film they made together. For his part, Redford confessed years later that he had no idea about her feelings at the time. Their friendship, however, remained steady and full of mutual admiration.
Remembering A Hollywood Legend
Beyond their personal connection, Fonda often reflected on Redford’s warmth, charm, and unique presence. In a 2015 interview, she recalled how working with him was always joyful, even if he occasionally arrived to set in a difficult mood. By the time of their final collaboration, Fonda said she realized she had grown enough to appreciate Redford for who he was, both as an actor and as a person.
Robert Redford’s career stretched across generations, from his early work in television to his rise as a major film star and his lasting contributions as a director and activist. His final screen appearance came in March 2025 with a cameo in Dark Winds, a fitting close to a career that left an indelible mark. He is survived by his wife, Sibylle; daughters Shauna and Amy; and his grandchildren.
