A newly shared black-and-white aerial image of Elvis Presley’s Memphis estate is giving fans a rare look into the past. The old Graceland photo, posted on Presley’s official social media page, reveals the mansion and grounds before they became the iconic landmark known around the world today.
In the image, Graceland stands without some of its most famous additions. The old Graceland photo predates the Meditation Garden and pool, reminding fans of Elvis’s 17,552-square-foot estate on 13.8 acres. In 1991, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Elvis Presley’s Early Days at Graceland

According to Parade, Elvis purchased the property in 1957 for $102,500 after his parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley, searched for a more private space. Fans had overwhelmed their previous home at 1034 Audubon Drive, making it difficult for the family to enjoy privacy. With help from realtor Virginia Grant, they discovered Graceland and quickly fell in love. Presley made a $1,000 down payment, and his parents moved in by May. Elvis followed in June after completing filming for Jailhouse Rock.

At the time the old Graceland photo was taken, the home measured 10,266 square feet. It would later expand to 17,552 square feet after renovations. These changes included the swimming pool, Meditation Garden, the famous Music Gates, a stone privacy wall, and interior upgrades such as the Jungle Room and stained-glass features.
Graceland Becomes a Landmark
After Elvis Presley’s death in 1977, Graceland transformed into a cultural landmark. When it opened to the public in 1982, over 3,000 fans lined up on the first day, each paying $5 to tour the King’s home.
Today, the property continues to attract visitors from across the globe. Graceland stands as the second most visited private residence in the United States, second only to the White House. Rare old Graceland photo shows the mansion’s humble beginnings before becoming a landmark.
