Madonna honors her late mother’s memory in a personal way. On Sunday, May 18, the Hung Up star shared a series of photos on Instagram Stories that showed her hair styled in dark brown curls, closely resembling her mother, Madonna Louise, who passed away from breast cancer in 1963.]
The 66-year-old singer was dressed in a black patterned hoodie and layered cross necklaces. In one of the photos, she wore a short brunette hairstyle, possibly a wig, giving the appearance of her mother from decades ago. The heartfelt tribute was a moment of remembrance for Madonna, who is still touched by a loss that shaped her life.

Madonna was only five years old when her mother died at the age of 30. Her mother’s absence has long influenced her work, and it remains one of the defining experiences of her youth. Growing up in Michigan as the third of six siblings, Madonna watched her father, Silvio Ciccone, later remarry while she continued to deal with the impact of her mother’s death.
Over the years, she has occasionally spoken about how that experience hardened her and helped shape her strength. “I was forced to grow up fast and understand my mother’s death.” She shared in the Sky documentary Becoming Madonna, which aired in January. The Queen of Pop also added that it was as though her heart “was ripped out.” Recent images shared on social media reflect the bond she shared with her mother.
Celebrating Mother’s Day
Just days before the post, Madonna spent Mother’s Day surrounded by five of her six children: Lourdes, Rocco, David, Mercy, and twins Stella and Estere. She shared the family celebration with a beautiful caption online, describing a weekend filled with sunshine, horseback rides, music, and peace among her children.
“The best gift they gave me was the gift of not arguing and being loving to one another.” She shared. Though she often presents a bold, tough image to the world, Madonna’s social media has recently shown her as a mother reflecting on moments that matter to her, from her childhood to raising her family.
