Toby Keith was one of the most recognized voices in country music. He rose to fame in 1993 with “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” a song that went on to become the most-played country track of the decade. He followed it with many hits, including “Beer for My Horses,” “As Good As I Once Was,” and “How Do You Like Me Now?”
In June 2022, Keith told fans he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Sadly, he died on February 5, 2024, at the age of 62. Now, more than a year later, one of his long-held dreams has come true.

In 2001, Toby Keith founded Dream Walkin’ Farms, a racing operation that combined his passion for horses with a competitive spirit. This year, his farm is making its first appearance at the Kentucky Derby with a horse named Render Judgment. The official news came from Keith’s Instagram account in late April.
Render Judgment finished 21st in a qualifying race on April 26, just missing a direct ticket to the Derby. However, when another horse dropped out, Render Judgment was moved up and secured a place at Churchill Downs. The announcement came with action shots of the horse and a note of pride for what Keith had built.
Toby Keith loved horse racing more than he loved music
Those who knew Keith said he cared about horse racing as much, if not more, than his music. Kenny McPeek, a prominent horse trainer, met him over 20 years ago at a race in Louisiana, and said Keith became a familiar face in the racing world. He was active, friendly, and committed to the sport.
In 2019, Keith said the Kentucky Derby was the race every owner wants to win. He admitted how hard it is to qualify and described the racing world as a gamble, full of highs and lows. Even though he’s no longer here, Render Judgment will now represent him on one of the biggest stages in the sport.
