Singer Johnny Mathis Retires From Touring As He Battles ‘Accelerated’ Memory Loss

Popularly referred to as “The Voice of Romance,” Legendary musician Johnny Mathis has enjoyed an incredible career that has lasted for seven decades. Known for his vibrant performances, smooth vocals, and several hit singles, such as “Chances Are,” “Misty,” and “Wonderful!” the singer has thrilled audiences across different generations all over the world over the years.

With over 80 albums to his name and several accolades, such as three Grammy Hall of Fame inductions, Mathis has earned recognition as one of the best-selling artistes of the 20th century. Recently, he made a shocking announcement that he would be hanging up his hat, claiming he has been undergoing a series of health challenges.

The music world received bittersweet news when Mathis decided to step away from touring and live performances. In the official statement via his Facebook account, his team explained that the 89-year-old icon was facing problems related to old age and accelerated memory issues, which have been making it quite difficult for him to keep performing.

Despite the unprecedented nature of the announcement, the statement revealed that Mathis is fully committed to completing his 2025 Voice of Romance Tour. His final performance is slated for May 18 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey, although all other shows scheduled beyond June have been canceled.

Mathis’s announcement comes as a rude shock to all his fans who have been looking forward to his 90-year birthday celebration, a milestone event that will take place later in the year on September 30.

The singer and his team expressed appreciation to his fans worldwide for their love and continued support for his craft throughout his decades-long musical journey, a career that they stated has undeniably been nothing short of excellent.
