The Sound of Music remains one of the most beloved musicals of all time, captivating viewers since its release in 1965. The movie is based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp family, which shows Maria, a nun-turned-governess, as she brings music and joy to Captain Georg Von Trapp’s seven children.
Six decades after its release, fans still cherish the cast members’ performances. In an interview, Angela Cartwright, who played Brigitta Von Trapp, recalls what the production felt like. She noted that they were not supposed to spend long on it, but they eventually had a blast.
‘The Sound of Music’ cast had a fantastic time on set despite some challenges
Julie Andrews starred as Maria von Trapp, and she became a household name. At the time, she was already known for her role in Mary Poppins, and her performance in The Sound of Music even helped her acting career. After the movie, she continued acting and appeared in movies such as Victor/Victoria and The Princess Diaries. In an interview, Julie Andrews recalled being knocked off her feet whenever the helicopter recording her started again during a scene of her singing on a mountaintop. Kym Karath, who played Gretl von Trapp, also had a challenging experience on The Sound of Music set.
Julie recalled Karath having to shoot a scene where she would go off a canoe despite not knowing how to swim. Then, an assistant director asked Julie to watch over her, and when they began, Karath almost sank twice before Julie caught her. After the movie, Kym Karath continued acting into adulthood before shifting her focus to philanthropy and children’s education.
Accident on set
Charmian Carr, who played Liesl von Trapp, also experienced challenges on set. Due to a mistake from the costume team, she had an accident while jumping across the benches in the gazebo.
They had forgotten to put rubber soles on her shoes, and when she had a sprained ankle, Charmian had to cover her bandage with makeup to complete the scene, and the crew gave her a standing ovation. After the movie, she retired from acting and later pursued a career in interior design.
