Stockard Channing brought unforgettable energy to the role of Betty Rizzo in the 1978 classic Grease. Channing was 33 at the time, and she played the feisty leader of the Pink Ladies, delivering memorable moments like her ballad “There Are Worse Things I Could Do.” Despite her standout performance, the film—and her personal efforts—were not taken seriously at the start.

Channing recently admitted that the film’s success came with resentment from critics, who dismissed Grease as a kids’ movie. She also felt overlooked despite the hard work she put into her character. Channing added that she desperately needed the role at that point in her life after facing struggles in show business.

Despite the fame she gained from Grease, Channing found it hard to secure new roles. Hollywood typecast her as Rizzo, which made it difficult for casting directors to see her in other characters. Instead of giving up, Channing returned to the stage.

She built her theater career with performances in productions like Six Degrees of Separation, which earned her a Tony nomination, and Joe Egg, where she showcased her dramatic depth. These roles allowed her to expand her range as an actor and gain respect for her talent.

Why Stockard Channing left the United States

Channing made a major life change in 2019 when she moved to England, where she has remained over the years and feels more at peace. When COVID-19 hit, she realized how much she valued the connections she had built and decided to make England her permanent home.

The 80-year-old shared that life now feels good, and she’s grateful for the close friendships she has rekindled. After experiencing the loss of loved ones and partners, she has embraced this phase of her life with contentment. Channing does plan on pursuing another long-term relationship or a fifth marriage as she is focusing on the life she has built.
