On January 10, an X user reposted Cyndi Lauper’s clip from a November concert, in which she was singing and dancing to her song The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough. The user captioned the post, “WTF happened to Cyndi Lauper?” The video immediately went viral, with several mixed reactions in the comments. While some acknowledged her extraordinary ability to perform at her age, others criticized her.
“Whoa. That’s bad. She shouldn’t be performing,” A user wrote in the comments, among others who referred to the video as “embarrassing.” However, despite the criticisms, her loyal fans rushed to her defense, celebrating her strength and resilience in her career at her age. “Dude, she’s 71 years old. I hope I’m hopping around like that at 71,” one fan wrote. Others also showed their respect for the music icon.
Early career
Cyndi Lauper’s personality and sense of style have singled her out since the beginning of her career, and she has remained true to it. In 1983, four of Cyndi’s singles from her debut album, She’s So Unusual, became the first debut album by a female artist to achieve top-five hits. Followed by these achievements were other awards and international recognitions that catapulted her career.
Despite the backlash, a music critic and internet personality, Anthony Fantano, joined to celebrate Cyndi Lauper in the comments, “She dropped multiple hits, made many albums, aged, and had a career that resulted in a fanbase that she’s still performing for decades.”
