Liza Minnelli opened up about one of her mother’s songs that makes her cry every festive holiday, and the track is none other than “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” which Judy Garland sang in 1944’s Meet Me in St. Louis.

Liza told PEOPLE in a recent interview that Judy’s cover of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” is her favorite Christmas carol, adding that her dad, Vincente Minnelli, directed Meet Me in St. Louis. As the holiday inches closer, Liza told the outlet that she is prioritizing family, which was hard to do in the past.

Liza was inspired by her mother to pursue a career in acting and music, adding that she was never treated like a child. Judy was strict and deliberate about raising Liza like a grown-up; hence, she skipped the baby talk and introduced her to proper communication early on.

Unlike what most Judy fans think, Liza actually had a happy childhood. She admitted that there were bouts of yelling followed by quietness and Judy not being home so often, but that did not affect her emotional health badly. Liza added that Judy did not mind the misconception from the public, as believing they were unhappy made her rendition of “Over the Rainbow” made them cry.
