Turning down a role is a common decision for actors, but occasionally, it leads to one of those “what could have been” moments in Hollywood history. Some actors reject roles that later became a classic piece, and John Lithgow made the same mistake, turning down the opportunity to star in Cheers.
John Lithgow shared that he had the chance to join Cheers as Dr. Frasier Crane. However, he and his agent agreed not to think about episodic TV. Now, the actor can’t help but wonder about the path he did not take.
John Lithgow turned down Dr. Frasier Crane role in ‘Cheers’
The actor revealed that the TV comedy series was so beneath his dignity at that period that he didn’t even remember it had been offered to him. At the time, Lithgow was at the peak of his film and theater career, with two Oscar nominations already under his belt. Over the years, Lithgow has spoken about his decision to decline the chance to star in Cheers. In earlier interviews, he admitted that he wasn’t focused on television at the time and didn’t foresee the massive success of the show or the character.
Lithgow claims he has just a few regrets, but he’s glad he did 3rd Rock from the Sun for six years, which he admits was a “glorious experience.’’ More recently, Lithgow reflected on the offer with a mix of admiration for the show and appreciation for Grammer’s work. Far from expressing regret, he has praised Grammer’s performance as Frasier, acknowledging that the role found its perfect match.
Kelsey Grammer transformed ‘Cheers’
Kelsey Grammer turned Frasier into one of the most beloved characters in television history. Joining Cheers in its third season, Grammer brought humor, and depth to the neurotic psychiatrist. His portrayal was so natural that when Cheers ended, the character received his own spin-off, Frasier, which ran for 11 seasons and won numerous awards, including multiple Emmys for Grammar. The show also returned for a revival in 2023.
While Lithgow’s decision may be one of Hollywood’s famous “what-ifs,” his career never took a hit. Lithgow went on to win awards for projects like 3rd Rock from the Sun; however, Grammer’s work as Frasier remains legendary. Sometimes, the role chooses the actor—and in this case, it found its perfect home.
