Jack Nicholson thought his career was over in the ‘80s after seeing Ferris Bueller’s Day Off the night before a New York Times interview. He admitted to feeling irrelevant after watching the teen comedy film, noting that he felt trapped as a creative person.

Jack deemed the movie void of creativity and seemed to be the only one with this perspective as director John Hughes and most viewers enjoyed the plot. As the name implies, it was about a high school senior named Ferris Bueller, who fakes an illness to skip school but gets caught in his mischief.

Why did Jack Nicholson dislike ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ so much?

Jack left the theater feeling like he could not dumb down to the shallow expectations Ferris Bueller’s Day Off seemed to satisfy. He also had a problem with media companies owned by bigger corporations focused on making a profit rather than promoting creativity.

Jack remained shocked by the general reception of the classic, but his career remained intact as he went on to make Oscar-worthy hits like Ironweed, As Good As It Gets, Anger Management, and About Schmidt. He wanted to star in a Napoleon biopic with Stanley Kubrick; however, it never happened due to budget concerns and the financial risk of historical movies at the time.

Is Jack Nicholson retired?

Jack has not announced an official retirement; however, he stepped back from making movies in 2010 after How Do You Know? His longtime friend and record producer Lou Alder assured that he was okay but now favors a recluse lifestyle as he ages. He added that Jack just wants to be quiet and live on his terms before he passes away.

There have been rumors about the 87-year-old battling memory loss, but he denied this himself in an interview, stating that he still has a mathematician’s brain. During his move away from the spotlight, he refused Lorne Michael’s offer to star in MacGruber, which ended up being a box-office flop.
