As the world of fashion progresses, getting dressed sometimes requires going back in time for inspiration. Some fashion pieces from the Boomer era— the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s, are making a comeback, particularly from the 1950s.
‘50s fashion was influenced by Hollywood, a sense of liberation after the Second World War, and the rise of new materials like nylon, polyester, and spandex. The music scene also inspired what people wore, with rock ‘n’ roll being at the forefront of the genre. Here are some Boomer fashion pieces that are getting back in vogue;
Denim Jeans
Denim seems to have always been around; however, they were not the norm for women until the ‘50s. Thanks to its durability and versatility, it has become a wardrobe must-have across generations.
Flared pants
Flared pants are slowly replacing skinny jeans, giving a semblance of ‘60s fashion with celebrity acts like Elvis Presley, ABBA, Sonny and Cher rocking them. Lately, young people seem to prefer their jeans flared as tight-fitting ones go out of fashion.
High-waisted pants
High-waist pants became popular in the late ‘40s thanks to Katharine Hepburn’s signature Tuxedo style. Women also stuck with the trend after the war, as they had to wear similar bottoms to work in the factories.
The ‘Minis’
Model Twiggy revolutionized feminine style after women wore more modest below-the-knee skirts and dresses for years. The English model posed in mini-dresses and tiny skirts that American women quickly adopted in the ‘60s.
Pedal pusher pants
Capris were known as pedal pusher pants back in the day, and Audrey Hepburn was the influence behind its popularity. As the old name implies, they were convenient for riding bikes in, but they became adopted for regular fashion.
Tie-dye shirts
Tie-dye shirts were common among the Hippies of the ‘60s, who opted for daring alternative fashion. The colorfully patterned pieces are becoming a trend again, boosted by the inclusivity movement.
Loafers
Loafers are convenient, easy to wear, and stylish, so they easily took over the market when Gucci introduced them in the ‘50s. Designers like Victoria Beckham have joined Gucci to design modernized versions that young people love.
Maxi skirts
This was also common among the Hippies and was accompanied by eccentric accessories, scarves, and small-fitted tops. The recent earthy trend has brought back the maxi skirt in nicer designs and patterns.
