Belinda Carlisle returns to music after industry setbacks
Belinda Carlisle, born August 17, 1958, rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the groundbreaking all-girl band The Go-Go’s. Formed in 1978, the group revolutionized new wave music with their chart-topping debut album, Beauty and the Beat, in 1981. As the first and only all-female band to write and perform their music, The Go-Go’s achieved unprecedented success, selling over seven million records worldwide.
After the band’s breakup in 1985, Carlisle embarked on a successful solo career, producing hits such as “Mad About You,” “I Get Weak,” “Circle in the Sand,” “Leave a Light On,” “Summer Rain,” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” Recently, Carlisle returned to the music scene with her new single, “Big Big Love,” written by Oscar-winning songwriter Diane Warren, who is renowned for hits like Cher’s “Turn Back Time.”
After nearly three decades, Carlisle’s voice remains remarkably strong, thanks to her diligent daily Pranayama breath work and dedicated yoga practice. In an interview with People, Carlisle credited her healthy habits for maintaining her vocal peak: “As an older singer, I must prioritize prep. I no longer take my voice for granted.” Carlisle travels with three humidifiers to protect her voice while touring and adheres to strict rituals.
Carlisle’s return to pop music has been met with acclaim, particularly for her critically praised EP Kismet, a collaboration with Diane Warren. However, her journey wasn’t without challenges. Carlisle faced ageism in the music industry, being dropped by her record company at age 40. “It was mortifying, but it forced me to redefine myself,” she reflected. “What seemed like a disaster became a gift, leading to the most interesting part of my life.
