The wacky ups and downs of family life were put on full display across eleven seasons of Modern Family. Four years since the series finale, both fans and even actors have sparked rumors of a Modern Family revival or reunion event of some sort, a plan that star Ed O’Neill has some strong feelings about.
From 2009 to 2020, O’Neill played Jay Pritchett, the sometimes curmudgeonly patriarch of the Pritchett family, who finds himself at the center of a very blended, dysfunctional family. Each of the ensemble cast was given comparable screen time and actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson has been a driving force behind rumors that these actors could be brought back.
Ed O’Neill weighs in on rumors of a ‘Modern Family’ revival or reunion
Ferguson, who played Jay’s son Mitchell on Modern Family, ignited rumors of a reunion after sharing a photo to his Instagram stories. “Haven’t seen this view in a while,” he captioned over an image of the foyer belonging to his character’s sister, Claire, played by Julie Bowen. His return to the set ignited speculation that he might have been joined by his co-stars.

Adding his own fuel to the fire, Eric Stonestreet, who played Mitchell’s husband Cameron, shared a photo of his own starring Ferguson, echoing the caption, “Haven’t seen this view in a while.”
“I don’t like to do that stuff,” O’Neill said. But, he added, “I mean, I am open to it. I like everybody involved, so I wouldn’t be the guy who [says no if everyone else wants to]. I wouldn’t do that.”
The family that acts together sticks together
Distance makes the heart grow fonder, but for the cast of Modern Family, they forged something special in the crucible of working together in close proximity for over a decade. From the start, they agreed to negotiate together as a united front, fostering a sense of community amongst the actors, none of whom stepped forth to claim the title of “lead.”
So, when the cameras stopped rolling, their sense of familial love did not. Recently, Ferguson went out to support Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played his TV daughter Lily, at her school play.
Almost all of the Dunphy-Prichett-Tucker clan was present for the wedding of Sarah Hyland, known for playing the ditzy Haley Dunphy; Ferguson even officiated! Ty Burrell, who played Hyland’s TV dad Phil, even got a special shoutout in Hyland’s Father’s Day tribute message.
