Brian Wilson Receives Standing Ovation At ‘The Beach Boys’ Premiere Amid Health Struggles

Brian Wilson got to enjoy some fun, fun, fun thanks to some support from the fans, fans, fans. Disney+ just premiere of its new documentary, The Beach Boys, and at the TCL Chinese Theatre, Wilson received a powerful standing ovation from those in attendance.

This comes as 81-year-old Wilson is battling with mental health struggles. He was diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder, a neurocognitive condition that manifests in auditory hallucinations. He has also struggled with depression. His condition recently reached a new, somber milestone that has fans rallying to show him more support than ever.

On Tuesday evening, Wilson attended the premiere of the documentary The Beach Boys. Wilson was brought in in a wheelchair and was immediately greeted by a wall of applause from the other attendees. Videos show Wilson wearing a blue-green button-up shirt and black pants. Inside, he went over to greet many of his children; he has two biological children and five adopted children.

At the event, Wilson posed alongside his bandmates, Al Jardine, 81, David Marks, 75, Mike Love, 83, Blondie Chaplin, 72, and Bruce Johnston, 81.

Appearances such as these have been rare lately for Wilson, whose family recently filed for conservatorship amid his deteriorating mental health. However, on Tuesday night, Wilson appeared to be in good spirits enjoying the festivities.

The Beach Boys is a celebration of the legendary band that revolutionized pop music,” reads a synopsis for the documentary, “and the iconic, harmonious sound they created that personified the California dream, captivating fans for generations and generations to come.”

It goes on to say, “The documentary traces the band from humble family beginnings and features never-before-seen footage and all-new interviews.”

Though this occasion is a bittersweet one, Wilson’s family does assure that there is some good news to be had through his struggles. “He’s getting older now, but he still has that spirit,” shared Wilson’s oldest daughter Carnie, “He is like a bull, that man is so strong. He is the strongest person I’ve ever met and he’s sweet and sensitive at the same time and he’s fragile, but he’s strong, so music keeps him alive.”
