As Brian Wilson’s health deteriorates, his family has deemed it best to keep him under conservatorship with his publicist Jean Sievers and longtime family friends and business manager LeeAnn Hard as co-conservators.
The Beach Boys bandmate is reportedly incapable of handling “his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter,” especially since the death of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, a few months ago. Amid his health challenges, the rest of the music group hopes to keep working with Brian to create new music.
The Beach Boys have been busy promoting their upcoming documentary, The Beach Boys, which is set for release on Disney+ by May 24. During one of their recent media rounds on BBC Radio 4’s Today, Mike Love made a hopeful statement about Brian still maintaining his musical abilities. He added that the singer joined them at Paradise Cove in Los Angeles as they wrapped up filming.
Mike assured fans that Brian is “well taken care of” and his condition is “not so negative as it sounds.” He noted that they get together often while hinting at the possibility of new music in the coming times. While Mike suggested a reunion at Glastonbury, Bruce Johnston insisted that they needed to help get Brian’s groove back by having him “sit round the piano, and just the magic. You can’t stop it.”
Brian’s band partners revealed that his “long-term memory” is still intact, as he manages to recall events from their teenage years; however, a declaration from a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Stephen S. Marmer, stated that Brian has challenges with his speech, and sometimes makes incoherent statements.
Thankfully, the 81-year-old can still “enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects as well as participate in any activities he chooses,” but under strict supervision. Due to his limited ability to function, Brian’s youngest children, Dash Tristan Wilson and Dakota Rose Wilson, have also been put in the care of a trusted guardian, Gloria Ramos.
